USING THE 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY TO STUDY

 IRAQ   AND AFGHANISTAN

LOCATION

PLACE

REGIONS

MOVEMENT

HUMAN ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

9/11 IS A DAY THAT ALL OF US WILL REMEMBER. IT IS THE EVENT THAT SPARKED THE UNITED STATES’ WAR ON TERRORISM WHICH IS TAKING PLACE IN TWO OF THE WORLD’S HARSHEST GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS. IN THIS ASSIGNMENT WE WILL LOOK AT THESE TWO REGIONS USING THE 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY TO DO SO. THIS WILL GIVE US A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHALLENGES FACED BY OUR TROOPS ON A DAILY BASIS.

IN THIS ASSIGNMENT YOU  WILL DOING A WEBQUEST, IN WHICH YOU WILL HAVE A CLEARLY DEFINED MISSION TO FIND SPECIFIC INFORMATION USING THE WEB.

You are not restricted to using the following web resources. They are listed merely as a starting point. Google is your friend, but be sure that any source you use is reputable.

Be sure to copy and paste any and all URLs for the sources you use. Create a separate Resources page in your wiki...

Location- is broken down into absolute location and relative location. Absolute location is determined by using an imaginary grid system of latitude and  longitude lines. Relative location is where a location is in relation to other locations. For example Florida is south of Georgia and north of Cuba. Citrus County is bordered on the east by the Withlacoochee River. Inverness is in eastern Citrus County. These are examples of relative location. Use the following links to study the absolute and relative location of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Place - the study of place includes an examination of both the "human" place and the "physical" place.  The human place includes an examination of a people's history, languages, religion, and social practices.  The physical place includes climate, elevation, land forms and vegetation.  To learn about the physical and human place that is Iraq and Afghanistan, visit the following links:

Regions -The desert, mountains, river plains make up the main physical regions of both Iraq and Afghanistan, but the study of "regions" also includes those created by people.  Political, agricultural, and industrial regions are examples of those created by people. To examine the many types of regions in Iraq and Afghanistan, visit the sites below:

Movement- How people got to where they are at is a big part of the study of Movement. This is called migration.  Also how people get themselves and their stuff from place to place is included in a study of Movement.  Airports, roads, water and other forms of travel are the focus here.  To find out about how people got there and how they  get around in Iraq and Afghanistan , explore the following links:

Human-Environment Interaction is the study of how people have interacted and are impacting the environment.  Are rivers polluted by industry?  How are other natural resources managed, and what are the possible environmental effects of other human decisions.  To examine the influence people have over the environment the effect the environment is having on our war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan, use the following links:

WEB QUEST: Geography and  War

There are very few places in the world where the people have this many challenging problems to overcome.  As of the year 2009, citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan are torn in a political and religious turmoil, but are still connected by history, politics, physical geography, economics, and the hope for a peaceful future.  Unfortunately, they are also linked by a violent past.  There are no easy ways to bring peace to this region and to the people, as many experienced diplomats have learned.  The lack of easy solutions, however, does not mean that something positive can't come from a serious look at all aspects of the problem, to include YOUR ideas for the future.

THE TASK

Your group must create and complete a wiki that includes the following elements. Each individual will also write a blog post regarding their position on the war and its consequences. Your wiki's Front Page should include a summary of the project and a brief statement about what soldiers in the Middle East must face in geographic terms. For each of the items outlined below, a seperate page should be created within your wiki.

Your blog post will be written on the group wiki. You can create a seperate page for each member of your group or place all posts on the same page within your wiki. The blog post should include a link back to your group's wiki. There is no length requirement, however your blog post should clearly indicate what your position is and why you feel the way you do. Remember, as always, do not fall into stereotypes or the bashing of other peoples and cultures.

1.  Create a timeline of both region's history, beginning in the middle ages (700-1300) up to the present. Make sure to include the various ethnic groups who have inhabited the regions. The theme of PLACE and MOVEMENT is most useful place to start. Embed this timeline in your wiki. You can find links to timeline resources on the Web Resources page.

2.  Create a map that includes at least 5 cities in Iraq and five in Afghanistan. Include important information about each city such as population, ethnicity, etc. Include the exact location (latitude and longitude) for each. Visit the LOCATION links for your information and the Web Resources section on this wiki. Embed this map or maps into your wiki.

3.  Create a bar graph illustrating the make up of various Ethnic and Religious groups in both regions.   Visit both the PLACE and REGIONS links for information. Use Create A Graph (check the Web Resources page) to create these graphs, then embed them into your wiki.

4.  Create a presentation that compares and contrasts the physical geography of Iraq and Afghanistan. Then write a brief statement outlining the challenges faced by US soldiers based on the geography of each area. Use the PLACE and REGIONS section of your links.

5.  Culture:  Soldiers must also understand each region's culture. Research the culture of each region. Examples of a regions culture could include literature, music, food, cinema, etc.  Your wiki should include at least 5 unique pieces (examples) for each region.

6.  Position blog post:  In a 200 word minimum "position" blog post, outline what your position is on the war. Should we have gone in? How should we end it? Should we move more troops to Afghanistan, etc?  This is an individual assignment. You must have supporting details to reinforce your position.
